Why an aftermarket play-yard mattress can leave a deadly gap

Aftermarket mattresses for play yards and cribs often look like a comfort upgrade. According to CPSC, some Voomf-branded mattresses sold on Amazon created the opposite problem: gaps that can trap an infant, plus crib mattresses that fail mandatory flammability rules.
What happened
In a recall posted August 6, 2026 (recall number 26-669), CPSC says Voomf play-yard and crib mattresses violate the mandatory crib mattress standard because they may not adequately fit certain play yards, posing a deadly entrapment hazard. Babies can suffocate in gaps between an undersized mattress (or extra padding) and the side walls, especially if the face becomes trapped against the side and mattress.
Separately, the full-sized crib mattresses violate the mandatory flammability standard for mattress sets, posing a fire hazard.
About 2,401 units are included. CPSC received one report of inadequate mattress fit; no injuries were reported at the time of the notice.
Who is affected
The recall covers Voomf-branded products sold exclusively on Amazon.com from January 2026 through May 2026 for about $40–$87:
- Tri-fold aftermarket play-yard mattresses: white with a neutral letter or balloon print; about 38 × 26 × 3 inches. Label inside the cover reads “Product Model: BYL001.”
- Full-sized crib mattresses: white with an aquamarine band and side zipper; about 25 × 27 × 5.5 inches. “voomf” appears on a side label.

What to do
According to CPSC, stop using the mattresses immediately and contact Voomf at voomfrecall@outlook.com for a full refund. Consumers are asked to destroy the products by writing “Recalled” in permanent marker, cutting the play-yard mattress in half, and cutting the full-sized mattress cover diagonally with scissors, then emailing a photo of the destroyed product. Dispose of the remains per local rules. Do not resell or give the mattresses away.
Safe sleep guidance from public health agencies continues to emphasize a firm, properly fitting mattress designed for the specific crib or play yard—this recall is a concrete example of why “close enough” sizing is not enough.
CPSC’s notice underscores a wider pattern: aftermarket mattresses marketed for play yards must still meet mandatory fit and safety standards. If a mattress leaves gaps along the sides, stop using it even when a formal recall has not been posted, and use only the mattress designed for that specific product when the manufacturer supplies one.
